Identity in Paris 2024 - by Thaíssa

You've probably heard about the Olympics, right? Today we are going to talk some curiosities about the next edition in Paris this year🏅

We are in the final stretch of waiting for Paris 2024, one of the biggest and most global events we have today, the Olympics, which bring together people of all races, colors, ethnicities and backgrounds in one place in an exciting dispute in the race for Olympic medals. But while the Olympic Games don't start, here are 5 fun facts to help you prepare for this year's event!

1.The Olympic Games Paris 2024 take place exactly 100 years since Paris hosted the Olympics back in 1924

100 years later, on 26 July 2024, Paris will officially welcome the world to the Olympic Games for a third time, while these Olympics will be the sixth held in France (in addition to the three Summer Olympics mentioned above, France has also staged the Winter Olympics on three occasions: Chamonix 1924, Grenoble 1968 and Albertville 1992).

2.Some Olympic events will happen in iconic places of Paris

We will be able to watch the beach volleyball that will be held on the Champ de Mars (under the Eiffel Tower, yes literally under one of the most iconic monuments in France), urban sports will be held on La Concorde, fencing and taekwondo at the Grand Palais, the start of the Marathon at the Hotel de Ville (which is actually currently the city hall of Paris, it was originally built in 1357, that is, more than six centuries ago, the building has followed canonical events in French history from the French Revolution, the Franco-Prussian War, to the proclamation of the Third Republic of France, this one has a story to tell)

3.The Olympic mascot of Paris 2024

The name of the Paris 2024 mascot is Phryge Olímpica, based on the traditional small Phrygian caps that inspired the mascots. The name and design were chosen as symbols of freedom and to represent allegorical figures of the French republic. The Olympic Phryge is shaped like a Phrygian cap. As the vision of Paris 2024 is to demonstrate that sport can change lives, mascots will play a very important role in leading a revolution through sport. The Olympic Phryge has the colors blue, white and red – the same as the famous tricolor flag of France – with the gold logo of Paris 2024 emblazoned on its chest.

4.The competitions in the waters of Paris will be the stage for the highest number of medals in the competition, with 49 events in all.

Swimming is one of the oldest Olympic sports, present in every modern Games since Athens 1896. The Paris 2024 swimming competition will feature 852 athletes who will compete for medals at the Paris La Défense Arena.A total of 852 athletes will compete in swimming at Paris 2024 with a maximum of 26 places for men and 26 for women available for each NOC. For both men's and women's competitions, a maximum of two athletes per individual event and one relay team per event will be eligible for each NOC.

5.The Paris games will be a step towards gender equality in sports because it will be the first to have the same number of female and male athletes participating.

The Olympic Games in Paris in 2024 will be the first with full gender equality, according to an announcement made by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). In the program of the next Olympics, of the total of 10,500 athletes who will compete for a medal, there will be 50% women and 50% men. This would be the first time (hopefully the first of many) that the Olympic Games of the Modern Era will have the equality of athletes of both genders, a reason for great pride and expectation for this edition.

I really hope this blog has inspired you to get a little more excited to watch and follow the Paris 2024 Olympic Games! I hope you enjoyed it!

See you next time💙
