2026 | Chrono Trigger: Why this classic is still one of the bests RPGs of all time?, by Caetano

Originally released in 1995, Chrono Trigger isn’t only another old RPG, it is frequently regarded as one of the greatest games ever made. Even decades later its influence remains strong, whether in the nostalgia of longtime players or the curiosity of those looking to explore the roots of the genre. But what exactly makes this game so special? The answer for me is in its story, gameplay and innovation. When there is Hironobu Sakaguchi (creator of Final Fantasy), Yuji Horii (creator of Dragon’s Quest) and Akira Toriyama (creator of Dragon Ball) it could not go wrong, could it?

The story of Chrono Trigger is totally around time travelling and its consequences, a concept that is very hard to work with, but in the game it is executed with precision. The narrative follows Crono and his friends in their journey across different eras, from prehistoric times to post apocalyptic future, with the objective to prevent the world’s destruction. The game explores themes like destiny, sacrifice and friendship in a way that is both engaging and easy to follow.

In terms of gameplay, the game also stands out. Using a variation of the Active Time Battle (ATB) system, that comes from Final Fantasy IV, the combats become more dynamic as there is not that waiting for the other one to move (like in normal turn based games, like pokemon). One of its most different mechanics is the “Tech” system, that characters can combine abilities to use powerful combined attacks, the ability cyclone from Crono can be combined with flamethrower from Lucca becoming Fire Whirl, a more powerful move.

The characters are another important highlight, the game contains many playable characters. Each member of the party has their own personality, motivations and backstory. From Lucca, the brilliant inventor, to Frog, the cursed knight, every character has memorable moments that build a rich and immersive world. Even Crono, that remains silent the whole game, stands out through the player’s connection to his actions.

The soundtrack, from Yasunori Mitsuda and Nobuo Uematsu, deserves special recognition too. With unforgettable compositions, the music in Chrono Trigger brings immersion to each era, enhancing emotional moments and making impactful scenes even more memorable. Tracks such as: Presentiment, Morning Sunlight, Wind scene, and much more, are so beautiful and each one matches perfectly their determined places. Scattering Blossoms is my favorite one.

Visually, the game was impressive for its time. With the art direction inspired by japonese animation and character designs by Akira Toriyama, the style is instantly recognizable. Despite the technical limitations of the era, the game has aged very well.

Another aspect that sets Chrono Trigger apart from many RPGs is its replay value. The game have multiple endings, which vary depending on the player’s choices and how and when the final challenge is faced. Additionally, the New Game+ feature allows players to restart the journey while keeping their stats and equipment, encouraging exploration of all possible outcomes.

The legacy of the game is unquestionable. It helped define storytelling standars in RPGs and influenced countless games that followed. Even today, in an industry filled with hyper realistic graphics and massive open worlds, it remains a benchmark for creating engaging and memorable experiences.

So, is Chrono Trigger still worth playing today? The answer is obviously yes. While its graphics may seem simple compared to modern standards, its accessible gameplay, beautiful story and remarkable soundtrack are better than any technical limitations.

In the end, Chrono Trigger is not just a classic, it is a timeless masterpiece. Whether you are revisiting this adventure or discovering it for the first time, there is something about it that continues to captivate players around the world.

And you, have you played Chrono Trigger? What was your favorite ending and why it was your favorite?
